Yup. That's the "G" word. You probably guessed it, beforehand.
Gay.
Why do people use that word? It's not like a situation can have a sexual orientation.
Well, a situation can't legitimately have an IQ, can it? No? Then why do we say "that's Stupid"? The english language isn't exactly the most... accurate of languages. We use words to express how we feel, and to communicate. English isn't Math. Not in the least. Nor is it a science. Wonder why there's a class called "Language Arts" in Elementary school? You can't mathematically or scientifically express your feelings. English is an art, and if people say "gay" to express what they feel or think, then that's how they'll use it.
But then why don't we say "that's Jewish" or "That's Black"? Well, I'm sure somebody's used it. It just doesn't seem to fit, because, well, this is race.
But "Gay" is a sexual orientation, isn't it?
Yes, but it's also been used so many ways. It's been used to express happiness, obviously describe sexual orientation, and probably more ways than I can think of right now (I'm too lazy to grab my huge-ass dictionary, right now XP)
Now here, you're probably going, "What a homophobic person, saying that the word 'gay' doesn't affect anybody! And he probably uses that word every day, too"
It's a word.
And it's not my fault if somebody takes offense to it, especially a word that's such an umbrella term.
And for the record,
1. Some of you may know, but I'm bisexual, so homophobia is out of the question
2. I'm questioning Gender, at the moment (I've already got the people I need for this), but the word "gay" kind of ties into this. Kind of...
3. If it really makes you happy, I did, for a period of time, use the word "gay" in that sense. But I have basically reverted to "stupid" and "bullshit", depending on the situation (again, English is an art), mostly out of habit
4. it annoys the hell out of me when somebody says it as every other word, but that's just they keep... fucking.. doing it..
So I'll challenge you:
If you use the word "gay" on a regular basis that isn't describing somebody's sexual orientation, regardless of whether you pay attention to it much or not, take a week off of it. And don't announce that somebody's gay, just for the sake of saying the word.
If you've only used the word for describing somebody's sexual orientation, and you're determined not to use it in the manner that other people tend to, break your own rule. For a week, instead of saying "stupid", say "gay". Now I don't mean "use it every time something goes bad". no. You can still say "stupid" or "bullshit", just put "gay" into the mixture, and play around with it.
If you decide to take the challenge, let me know how it goes for you.
Thanks for your time, and all the best
