personally in my mind, i automatically think. " awesome it's gay." because to me i can't see sexual orientation as a weakness.
but apparently this is the new fad for people to insult something with. teens at my school pass this insult around as if saying that's so:
stupid
dumb
lame
weird
uninteresting
pointless
different
annoying
disgusting
vulgar
grotesque
bizarre
creepy
retarded
idiotic
and it's quite disappointing that a group of people can be insulted on a minutely basis.
i could remember seeing the ads on youtube a bit back
[link] i could barely believe that people actually did this.
i grew up in the San Francisco area, so maybe at most i heard the phrase about 4 times in the seventeen years i lived there.
now that i am in a completely different environment i see the extreme problem it can cause.
on the record i can usually hear that phrase 85 times a day, AT LEAST.
my school has a GSA and a zero tolerance policy, and yet no teacher reprimands any student who says this.
in my school student hand book, it clearly states " if a member of faculty hears a student, they must be corrected and punished immediately."
and even though it it clearly stated in their bullying policy, i haven't seen any person corrected on their issues on not only phrases like " that's so gay" but on phrases that discriminate gender identity, racial, social, economic, sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and mental disabilities.
as a member of the LGBT community and as a HUMAN BEING, i am deeply offended that these things are a constant problem that no one addresses.
What am i supposed to do to help change awareness and stop ignorance if
1.) every time i try i am the one who ends up looking bad
ex. ignorant sophomore: this paper is gay.
me: so the paper is homosexual?
ignorant sophomore: no, it's a faggot
me: you know the word faggot means : a pile of sticks.
ignorant sophomore: and gay means happy, i was calling the paper happy gosh you're stupid
me: so papers have emotions now?
ignorant sophomore: you are really retarded you know that?
2.) i don't have friends in this new environment and if i were to be bullied no one would stand up for me. i've already been bullied ( for doing absolutely nothing) and i don't want it to happen again.
i would really appriciate comments in order to help stop not only homophobia, but other kinds of hate. ( i mainly focused on gay because it is the one i see most often)
